clear, i think at least, that the democrats want to go off the fiscal cliff. you can see it in the fact that president obama's out there campaigning instead of sitting down with john boehner, running around pushing for a bill to increase -- extend just the middle class tax cuts which he knows republicans will never do. you can see it in the fact that 33 senate democrats signed this letter which says, quote, we will oppose including social security cuts for current or future pen fisheries in any -- beneficiaries at any time. that's signed by harry reid. senator durbin giving a speech saying no touching medicare or medicaid in any year end package. so, basically, the democratic position is no changes to social security, no changes to medicare, no changes to medicaid, yet the mainstream media all you hear is three words: grover, grover, grover. all you hear is about republican intransigence on taxes. where are the stories about democratic intransigence on entitlements? it seems to me that what they want to do is go off the fiscal cliff, pocket the increase on the wealthy, the tax incr

fiscal cliff in particular. >> we got to the fiscal cliff because you had a bunch of republicans who wanted not to work with this president. now you've got republicans all of a sudden saying they are not going to take tax pledges like grover more question is wants, they are open to revenue enhancement. if they had said that two years ago or one year ago moody's wouldn't have lowered the pwhopbd ratinbond rating of the united states. they've created such uncertainty. alisyn: now that we are at the 11th hour where do you think we are now. >> i know that alan hasn't had a lot of private conversations with republican lawmakers, but take it from somebody who has. >> you don't know. >> these guys feel he will feel stymied, frustrated. they are not in the door. it's not even about compromising, that isn't even the right word. open the door, let's sit down and try to bargain and negotiate. he doesn't do that. alisyn: moving back to what the singer from the fray say. wouldn't it help for the president to invite the republicans instead of this adversarial conference room table, why not go play

their investment income hiked irrespective of any fiscal cliff talk. this is all thanks to obamacare? >> yeah, that's exactly right, megyn. there was a surtax in the health care law, supposedly to pay for medicare, but they raised it -- they raided the money out of medicare before it even arrived to pay for the new obamacare spending. it's 0.9% additional medicare tax on wages of high income earners, and it is 3.8% on all unearned income, so capital gains, dividends, rental income, interest, any other unearned income has this new 3.8% surtax, and that's on top of whatever might happen in these fiscal cliff talks. megyn: so that is happening. if you make $200,000 as an individual or 250 as a family, it's happening as of january 1. >> well, looks that way. my parsing of speaker boehner's offer in the fiscal cliff talks is that this is going to happen no matter what. they talked about holding the line -- megyn: no, wait, wait, wait, let me interrupt because i just don't want to confuse the two, because all the taxes are confusing. i'm saying this surtax, this .9 income tax surtax, and t
